Chester County Paws and a Cause is one of approximately 40 clubs in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York that raises puppies for The Seeing Eye, Inc. These special puppies come from The Seeing Eye's 330-acre breeding station in Chester, N.J., about 12 miles from their Morristown campus, and are delivered to their raisers at about 7 - 8 weeks of age.
Puppy raisers are volunteers, age 9 and older, who open their hearts and homes to these fuzzy heroes-in-training. Their job is to show the puppy as much of the outside world as possible, socialize them, teach them basic commands and good manners and show them an abundance of love. Puppy raisers attend monthly meetings with their pups to monitor progress, learn training techniques and to have any questions or concerns addressed. Each club has an area coordinator who is available for assistance between monthly meetings.
Pups are returned to The Seeing Eye at about 12 - 15 months of age to begin the next steps in their journey to becoming a fully trained partner with a blind person.
